Concert to Be Hosted by Tony Winner Brian Stokes Mitchell and Feature Jessie Mueller, Stephanie J. Block, Gavin Creel, Capathia Jenkins, Killian Donnelly, Ana Villafane, Caissie Levy & the Casts of On Your Feet, Beautiful and Kinky Boots
The award-winning composer, vocalist and actress Sara Bareilles will be honored at A Night of Broadway Stars on Monday, May 22nd at Jazz at Lincoln Center in New York City for her advocacy on behalf of young people. The annual Night of Broadway Stars features artists from many of Broadway’s hottest musicals and is a benefit for Covenant House, the largest charity in North and Central America serving homeless and trafficked youth. The concert will be directed by veteran director, choreographer and Covenant House Board member Jeff Calhoun (Newsies) and hosted by Tony winner Brian Stokes Mitchell (Shuffle Along, Ragtime).
Covenant House has so far announced appearances by Jessie Mueller (Waitress, Beautiful), Stephanie J. Block (Falsettos, The Mystery of Edwin Drood), Gavin Creel (Hello Dolly), Capathia Jenkins (Newsies), Killian Donnelly (Kinky Boots), Ana Villafane (On Your Feet), Luca Padovan (School of Rock) and the ensemble casts of Kinky Boots, Beautiful and On Your Feet. More cast members will be announced next month.
Sara will receive The Beacon of Hope Award in recognition of her work inspiring millions of girls, young women and LGBTQ youth to be proud, strong, brave and resilient. “Sara is a powerful voice and an inspiration for our young people at Covenant House,” said Covenant House President Kevin Ryan. “Every day in 30 cities across six countries, kids who have experienced homelessness come to the doors of Covenant House. Sara’s song “Brave” is an anthem to many of them, and perfectly describes so many kids, each one rising up in love. She has used her gifts to empower and inspire a generation of young people, to light a path to home for the tens of thousands of youth Covenant House reaches each year.”
Sara first achieved mainstream critical praise in 2007 with her widely successful hit “Love Song,” which reached No. 1 in 22 countries around the world. Since then Sara has gone on to receive six Grammy nominations throughout her career and her book, Sounds Like Me: My Life (So Far) in Song is a New York Times best seller. Sara composed the music and lyrics for “Waitress” for which she received her first Tony Award nomination for Best Score and a 2017 Grammy Award nomination for Best Musical Theater Album. Sara joins an elite group of distinguished past Beacon of Hope Award recipients including First Lady Laura Bush, rock star and philanthropist Jon Bon Jovi, country star and philanthropist Martina McBride, Yankees General Manager Brian Cashman, film director James Cameron, jazz great Herbie Hancock, composer Neil Berg, Broadway actress Rita Harvey, and humanitarian Olivia Harrison, wife of the late, great Beatle and philanthropist George, whose support of Covenant House in Guatemala (known as La Alianza) has provided the poorest of the poor with love and hope.
The evening will also honor Julio Portalatin, a member of the Covenant House Board of Directors and the Chief Executive Officer of Mercer. Covenant House’s A Night of Broadway Stars will include a full revue of performances and will also include young people living at Covenant House programs in New York.
